This three to four-hour class runs on Saturday, February 25th and starts at 11:30am.

Preparation for the Class:

Prerequisites
  • A desire to learn more about photography and how to take better pictures
  • A positive energy and a willingness to get creative
  • No specific level of photographic experience is necessary for this course, other than a basic understand of your camera and its menu system.
What to Bring to Class
  • A notepad and pen/pencil. Summary handouts will be distributed, but they will not cover every detail you may want to have for later.
  • Optional: Something to eat and/or drink to keep the energy strong for learning!

Class Overview & Topics:

This is an entry-level workshop discussing strategies, techniques, and exercises for composition and further developing your photographic eye. The primary objective of the workshop is to improve your ability to see the world more creatively and as a result improve your photography. A set of class notes will be provided. The class will cover the following topics:
  • What makes a great photograph
  • Elements of composition
  • How the eye reads a photo
  • Setting up the shot
  • Working the scene
  • Exercises to improve your photographic eye

About the Instructor:

Michael is a tirelessly self-taught photographer with an unwavering passion for the craft. He shoots everything from landscapes to sports, weddings, events, wildlife, products, and over the past few years has specialized more and more in portraits and models. Michael has work hanging at the California Academy of Sciences and at the Alameda Historical Museum. He had a photo selected as the cover of a Random House bestseller, and was published in a special edition of Bake magazine. He was president and is a currently active board member of the Alameda Photographic Society. He has also taught a series of photography workshops for the week-long UC Berkeley Lair of the Bear camp.
