Product Description

Date & Time:

This five-hour workshop runs on Saturday, February 17th. The workshop begins with a classroom lecture from 4:30pm-6:00pm. From there, everyone will drive to Rodeo Beach (also known as Fort Cronkite) located in the Marin Headlands. You will arrive in time for a sunset shoot and a 2-3 hour nighttime field session ending at approximately 10:30pm. The class is limited to 10 students to assure a good experience with a personalized experience.

Preparation for the Class:

This class requires that you have and bring along a fully charged DSLR or interchangeable lens camera (mirrorless camera) capable of ISO 1600 or more, as well as a tripod. Students must have a basic knowledge of their camera’s operation. Students should bring a notebook to the lecture, a headlamp or small flashlight, and a sense of adventure for the field shoot. The field shoot requires a short (1/4 mile) walk/hike along the beautiful Rodeo beach. We also recommend that you wear layers (as it can be quite chilly at night on the coast), as well as shoes that are good for walking.

Class Details:

This workshop is best described as a beginners’ introduction to night landscapes and astrophotography. Please note: the classroom presentation will cover both night landscapes and astrophotography. The field session will cover landscapes, and if weather permits, some astrophotography as well.

Students will learn DSLR camera settings such as the correct apertures, ISOs, shutter speeds and white balances needed to capture landscapes at night, as well as the Milky Way and other celestial subjects.

The class will also teach students how to focus in the dark and the use of light painting and off camera flash techniques as well as compositions, and the use of intervalometers (long exposure remotes) for long exposures and star trails.
