Class Overview:

In travel photography, our cameras become extensions of how we perceive our environments, whether they are familiar or foreign, and our photos tell powerful stories about what we have witnessed.  In this class, you will learn how to capture the ethos of a location, examine human impact by connecting culture and environment, and to gain trust through building relationships in the field. We will also discuss the travel photographer’s gear set-up, and pre-trip planning and research.  Finally, we will discuss how to create a cohesive photo-narrative, including how to shoot for a purpose and use your photographs as advocacy.

Specific Topics Covered:
  • Pre-Trip Planning and Preparations: When and where to go; travel logistics; cultural research; purpose/focus
  • The Travel Photographer’s Set-Up: The camera; lenses; the bag; accessories and many more useful considerations
  • In the Field: Finding the moment; composition; telling the story of a place; gaining trust
  • Creating a Photo-Narrative: Shooting with a purpose; editing and telling your story
